Red face

All I can say is go to E-bay and search for "My Scene Bling Bling."If AG is all about kepping girl-hood traditions alive, then why won't they leave Matell or somethin'? I know I WOULD NOT want my little sister playing with that! But that's just what sells..........

You hit the nail on the head, hon. It's about what sells. As someone starting a small business, I can tell you in business it all boils down to the ulmightly dollar no matter how good the starting intentions are. That's just the way it is, and I don't think we should get hostile about it because if WE were running the business, we'd quickly see things their way.

Now, I don't agree with everything Mattel sells, but I think so far they have shown a commitment to keeping American Girl true to form. Sometimes their actions are questionable, but I still think American Girl continues to offer one of the most wholesome doll lines out there. And let's not forget, Pleasent Rowland herself sold AG to Mattel because she thought they could take her ideas and legacy to the next level. She had faith in them, so maybe as collectors who have faith in her, we should keep that in mind when Mattel run AG does something we don't agree with.

But remember everyone, AG even said that their target wasn't collectors. It's girls. And they don't seem to care about the fact that we want better quality products!

I think those are cute and if my daughter wanted them, I'd buy them. They are just dolls.

Attacking toys as being bad rolemodels or whatever instead of treating them as the innocent playthings they are does more to hurt "girlhood" than these kinds of toys ever could.

But the whole purpose of the company is to teach girls 8-12 about history. They are not going to spend a bunch of money to make a high quality product for a little girl who might not take the best care of it, because they are not making their products for adult collectors.

I like the My Scene Bling bling dolls - they have glittery makeup!! If Nolee was in my area I would be tempted to buy her. Their clothes are dumb, but.... I agree that it is just a toy. Now what I wouldn't buy for a child would be a Bratz doll. they seem to bring out the meaness in them somehow and cause them to get on Amazon.com and rip on My Scene fans. Geesh. Although I think it is a shame that Mattel does have PC in some ways, like making Elizabeth blonde - then making cheap looking clothes that look like Barbie outfits.. I wouldn't want any of Elizabeth's clothes. Cute doll though. But that's just my opinion.

I really am not in the same boat at all about this. I am very much 100% pro-Barbie/fashion dolls/Bratz. However, lately Mattel has been irritating me on the Barbie front. I don't like the fact that they've been giving their regular playline dolls larger heads and pretty much doing away with Fashion Avenue and carded fashions. I miss the SuperStar era! <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">This is what saddens me about AG. They almost seem against encouraging adults to collect their products. The reason this bothers me is because many other children's companies embrace adult aficionados. For example, Life of Faith advocates their line is nice for "adults who will see and appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship." Cricket Magazine, which is for children around age 12, frequently prints letters from its readers--even if they're in their 40s! And other companies like MindWare, Magic Cabin, and Hearthsong post ages and always are sure to mention if they feel adults will like the games, books, etc. as well.

I totally understand that their focus should be children, and agree with it, but don't like them outright saying things against adult collectors.

That's a little off-topic, but more related: I do find it sad that they are trying to bend toward following today's culture rather than trying to bend culture to reflect themselves (and I hope that makes sense). The AGT line seems to be becoming more Barbie-ish in nature with certain products as well, even though AG is separate from Mattel.

Barbie is now Fisher-Price, although I don't know when we'll see changes. It will be interesting to see what (if anything) changes!
